This place is a scam. Quote ridiculous repair fees, and either keep your $50 deposit or sell your tv you won't get back. It's a win/win for him, don't give him your business.

First thing that should have given me pause was how cluttered and dirty the place was. Could barely find anywhere to place the two tv's. But I thought "oh well" and explained the issue.

So a few days ago I took my 42" tv to Sterling TV Repair/Sterling Electronics on 156 street based on the recommendation of my girlfriends co-worker. The basic problem was that while it was getting power, there was no sound and the screen was black. After much online research it seemed likely it was a blown capacitor and should have been a minor repair. I also brought in a 32" tv that had some lines on it hoping to trade it for whatever value I could get against repair fees.

So two days later he calls me with an estimate. It's $400. To repair a 3 year old tv bought for about $270.

only place that would sell me the part that I needed for my T.V called a few other places they either didn't sell these particular parts or wouldn't sell them and only want to inspect and service it! sterling electric is the best electronic repair shop in Edmonton! havING a servicemen to inspect your TV would cost over 50 $, which must be paid even if tv cannot be fixed! after that repair costs are astronomical. that's why sterling electric is a great store. I knew what needed to be done, bought the part and repaired myself saving 100's of dollars . I highly recommend anyone needing repair's for things they can service or parts you need , do so! . tho, the owner seems like he needs a long over due vacation! keep up the good work!

I've been coming to sterling electronics for over 5 years. An amazing selection of parts and extremely knowledgeable owner. Highly recommended.

Naturally I told him where to go, and now he (or course) is keeping my tv's to repair and sell at what I am sure is more than it's worth, but certainly under $400.

He immediately dismissed the capacitor issue and claimed that "everyone thinks it's the capacitors"...but hey, he knows tv's better than I do, right?

Next he tells me the little tv is only worth $10. Ok, fine. Then he tells me he needs a $50 deposit that he says will be waived when I get repairs done. Um, no...I am leaving my property with you, if you give me a reasonable estimate then I will have you repair my stuff.

Great place for the electronics hobbyist. Great selection of hard to source parts, with knowledgeable customer service.

Again, FOUR HUNDRED DOLLARS. all to replace what is likely a 50 dollar (or less) part and an hour or so of labour.

I talk him down and he agrees to just take the "$10 tv" as my deposit. Very quickly too which just makes him asking for a deposit in the first place all the more fishy.
